The scheme forms the gateway to the new development which is on target for opening in September and is part of a projected £1 billion overall 30-year transformation of the Dundee Waterfront.

On behalf of main Contractor BAM Construction Ltd, of Edinburgh, and client Dundee City Council, specialist civil engineering and hard landscaping contractor PJ Carey Group Plc, of Livingston, West Lothian, carried out some 6,000 square metres of paving works using 85mm granite slabs in varying lengths on the approaches to the stunning new development.

BS7533 compliant materials from Parex were used for bedding, bonding and jointing the paving with some 400 tonnes of Fine Bedding Concrete (FBC) mixed automatically on demand from two silos which were regularly replenished throughout the course of the contract to ensure a constant supply of FBC and facilitate fast progress of slab laying.

In order to form a strong bond between the bedding concrete and the granite slabs, the slabs were coated with liquid Parex Bond Plus mortar prior to laying. After initial setting, Parex Granatech high strength jointing mortar was applied as a slurry, followed by cleaning using mechanised belt cleaners.

The project at Discovery Quay is the latest phase in a programme of hard landscaping and improvements carried out on Dundee’s impressive waterfront.

The latest phase forms the approaches to the new museum designed by Japanese architects Kengo Kuma & Associates.

The £80 million V&A Dundee will present the brilliance of Scottish creativity and the best of design from around the world. The first-ever dedicated design museum in Scotland and the only other V&A museum anywhere in the world outside London, V&A Dundee will provide a place of inspiration, discovery and learning through its mission to enrich lives through design.

The new museum will bring exhibitions from the V&A and other international museums to Scotland, as well as curating its own exhibitions in future years. V&A Dundee will have an international outlook: investigating the global importance of design, commissioning new work and contributing to public understanding of the role of design in everyone’s lives.

V&A Dundee will also present the largely untold story of Scotland’s outstanding design achievements, bringing together in one place the world-renowned V&A collections with loans from other collections in Scotland and beyond to allow everyone to understand and be inspired by this important design heritage.
At the heart of the permanent galleries will be the Oak Room, an entire, original Charles Rennie Mackintosh tearoom interior.
